It's true - even though it's been about a year since the Gentoo team released stage tarballs, drobbins has stages 1-3 tarballs for a variety of x86 sub-architectures, including athlon-xp, amd64, and i686. These will definitely save you compile time, so if you're using a slow machine, consider taking advantage of his time and effort.
