Quite some time ago I installed Gentoo on my workstation for dual booting. As part of this process, I replaced the MBR installed by Windows Vista with GRUB. After getting another workstation for Gentoo, I decided to delete the dual-booting Linux partitions and recover the space for Vista to use. Sadly, I didn't stop to think before deleting my GRUB (/boot) partition and resizing my NTFS partition - rendering my system completely unbootable. I had to make the system bootable without rebooting, but how...?
With Disk Management open and kicking myself for having deleted my /boot partition, which contains not only the grub configuration file, /boot/grub/menu.lst but the boot loader code as well! Since I was *IN* Windows, I dare not reboot or face the possibility of not being able to get back in my system (well...that's not entirely true). Since I don't have a Vista CD, I can't repair my MBR using the repair console, so what to do?
Luckily, there's an aptly named program that fixes Vista's MBR. It's called mbrfix and it's written by Kåre Smith. mbrfix allows you to modify your MBR in many ways - but most importantly, to fix it. mbrfix works for NT versions of Windows and for both 32-bit AND 64-bit systems.
Like so many parts of Vista now, you'll need to execute mbrfix in elevated privilege mode, so fire up a command console as administrator. Once you have the console open, you can use the mbrfix.exe command line utility to backup your MBR to a file, restore your MBR from a file, and most importantly, fix your MBR:
C:\> mbrfix64.exe /drive 0 fixmbr /vista /yes
Bam. MBR fixed and the system reboots without a hitch. If you're ever curious about dual booting Linux and Windows, a highly recommend you use this program to create a backup of your MBR before you start playing with your partitions - you wont regret it!
