Largely transparent in this day and age to most web surfers, it was at one time the de facto standard for moving files across early networks (and eventually, the Internet). It might surprise you to learn that FTP is probably older than most Internet users (incidentally, this includes myself). The first RFC that discusses a file transfer protocol dates back to April of 1971, nearly 37 years ago and was written "to promote the indirect use of computers on the network" by abstracting the access of files stored on a remotely networked computer. When hard drives were larger than a person and the most popular storage medium was magnetic tape, this was a big deal.
