I've had a strongly negative relationship w/ GoDaddy for a long time now, but I wasn't too impressed w/ the offering of other providers either, so I decided to stick it out. Yeah, I hated that they parked your domain if you didn't have content on it, their website is horrible to use and they try to cram down special offers around every corner. But I didn't care. At least until I had to renew 10+ domains and the added cost for private WHOIS and all sorts of other stuff really added up. There had to be a better offer!
Fortunately, my Googling skills didn't let me down and I found this website:
1and1. They offer domains for $6.99 including private registration. I know this post is sort of an advertisement, but it's really an endorsement. Their interface once you login is clean and clutter-free, their support was pretty good (they resolved my issue within 24 hours) and seriously, the price is just unbeatable. I don't use any of their other services (hosting etc.) so I'm not going to comment on those. But if you're looking for cheap domain registrations w/ a big company backing it up (1and1 is very popular in Germany), then .

I have to agree
I've been using 1&1 since they started marketing heavily in the U.S. back in about 2002. They've got Windows and Linux servers and they are infinitely easy to administer. I'm currently running 91 websites, about half Windows and half Linux. In six years I haven't experienced any significant outage. All their major services (hosting, email, PHP, ASP, MySQL) are rock solid. They have lots of other features, but they don't kill you with promotion -- just a monthly email newsletter and then they pretty much leave you alone.
They can handle heavy usage, too. One of my pages was Slashdotted about 18 months ago -- 55,000 page views in one day on a single page, the majority of them within a two hour period -- and the service never hiccupped. And with the huge bandwidth available, I've never approached 10 percent of my monthly limit on that.
